Framed by a sequence featuring the current Flash Wally West, the story of this "DC K.O." tie-in focuses on the Golden Age Flash Jay Garrick, and hardheaded Green Lantern Guy Gardner. They must fight each other to climb the sweet sixteen bracket and earn the title of "King Omega," the champion who will match Darkseid to save reality.

Reuniting a Flash with a Green Lantern is nothing new, it is actually historically expected. From Barry and Hal, to Wally and Kyle, and of course, Jay and Alan, these team-ups and friendships are cherished by many. This pairing is no friendship, however, because Guy cannot be friends with anyone, and this is a good hook for wanting to check the issue.
While the plot briefly revisits Guy Gardner's past as a Red Lantern and even his maligned Warrior days, it cannot execute the same take on Jay Garrick to satisfaction. Jay has not reinvented himself significantly in his 85-year history; he has always been his own man. That consistency should have been used to contrast Guy's multi-faceted life, instead of trying to dig for other versions of Jay where there are none.

Jay Garrick vs. Guy Gardner by Vasco Georgiev
Vasco Georgiev's artwork offers something completely different from what he has done in the previous several months in this title. His lines are more delicate and the camera angles are more traditional; the dynamics are conveyed instead by the panel placement. I find this take much better, because the characters look less cartoonish, especially in serious situations. Buddy Beaudoin's colors are amazing.
VERDICT: A good break from the ongoing West Family mishaps, and a visual treat.
SCORE: 7.0
