Review: World's Finest #46

Lex Luthor and Joker have merged into a nefarious all-knowing entity, thanks to the Absorbascon they stole from Hawkman in the previous chapter. Now, the World's Finest team has to meet this challenge by responding in kind, and recruiting the help of Green Lantern, brings back the fan-favorite Superman-Batman composite form from the early days of this series.

The distinctive trait of this title is its loose connection to DC's current continuity, and that is what makes it so enjoyable. The back-and-forth between Superman and Batman in their fused form is well executed as a reflection of how well the two characters know each other. Conversely, the dialog between Luthor and Joker seems to drag on, and unlike their interaction from the previous issue, becomes almost a chore to read. By now, guest appearances in "World's Finest" are mandatory, and always fun to see; however, Hawkman and Green Lantern show up in a big way, only to abruptly disappear from the action, despite their importance to the overall plot.

Superman-Batman Fusion by Adrián Gutiérrez

Adrián Gutiérrez and Vicente Cifuentes' artwork purposely combines rough lines and refined elements, making the panels feel neither excessively busy nor lacking detail. Tamra Bonvillain's warm palette gives the book its identity, bringing cohesiveness to it, regardless of who illustrates each issue. That's not to say that there should not be a permanent artist, so here is hoping that Gutiérrez stays in the title for the long run.

VERDICT: Entertaining and visually enticing.
SCORE: 8.0
